Course Summary

Religious Studies critically examines the teachings of religion and applies them to philosophical, sociological, and psychological questions. It develops students' capacity to think in a clear, structured manner and their capacity to handle difficult concepts. The course is an in-depth exploration of the philosophical origins, role and ethical teachings of religion and its influence on modern society. Consider the questions below; if you find any of them interesting, then Religious Studies could be for you!

  • How have people tried to prove God’s existence?
  • Can science and religion be reconciled?
  • Is there any basis to religious experiences or miracles?
  • Are the teachings of the Christian Church relevant to society today?

Course Details

Philosophy of Religion
An exploration into the nature of knowledge, traditional arguments for the existence of God, whether humanity possesses a soul and the nature of God.
Topics include Ancient Philosophical Influences, God's Existence, Religious Experience and much more.

Religion & Ethics
Can we establish a standard of 'good'? What is the correct moral action regarding contemporary issues such as Euthanasia?
Topics include Normative Ethical Theories such as Utilitarianism, Ethical Issues such as Euthanasia.

Developments in Christian Thought
What are the core teachings of Christianity? Are Christian values and ideals compatible with an increasingly secular society?
Topics include Christian Ethics, The Nature & Person of Jesus Christ, Christianity & Secularism.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is by three two-hour written examinations.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-5, including a grade 5 or above in English.
