Course Summary

Chemistry is critical to solving today's problems: faster and cheaper drug development, cleaner and more economical fuel sources, safer air and drinking water, biotechnology to improve health and food sources around the world, nanotechnology to reduce the size and environmental impact of many consumer goods, and green industrial processes to prevent pollution.

An A Level in Chemistry will enable you to contribute to these developments in the future. We strongly recommend that students study Maths alongside this subject in order to maximise their achievements.

Course Details

Chemistry is studied in a context-led approach. Students approach the subject in a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary chemistry. This specification, which has been developed by the University of York, places a particular emphasis on an investigational and problem-solving approach to practical work.

Year 1 includes the storylines Elements of Life, Developing Fuels, Elements from the Sea, The Ozone Story, and What's in a Medicine.

Year 2 includes the storylines The Chemical Industry, Polymers and Life, Oceans, Developing Metals, and Colours by Design.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will sit three exam papers at the end of the second year to determine your grade. You will also carry out 12 assessed practicals across the two years to achieve the practical endorsement.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-5 including a 6 in Maths and 6-6 in Science. If separate sciences are taken, a Grade 6 in Chemistry is required alongside a 6 in another science.

Equipment required

Students will need to purchase a lab coat, safety goggles and a lab book from the College.

Your next steps...
