Course Summary

Biology covers various topics, from developments in medicine to the study of the environment. It is a rapidly developing science with recent advances in fields such as gene technology. Biological studies have been essential in overcoming major concerns such as antibiotic resistance, vaccine development and food production to meet the needs of an expanding population.

Biology compliments other subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Maths, PE, English and Sociology.

Course Details

You will explore the theories and principles of living systems. The course covers biological molecules, cells, organisms exchanging substances with their environment, genetic information, and variations and relationships between organisms.

You will also cover energy transfers including photosynthesis and respiration, organisms responding to internal and external changes, genetics and populations, evolution and ecosystems, and the control of gene expression. In addition, you will complete the 12 required practical investigations, which will develop laboratory skills, techniques and problem solving.

You will develop independent study skills and take part in group work and discussions. This will teach transferable skills, which will help you to interpret data, investigate facts and draw conclusions.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There will be three exams at the end of the two years. Throughout the course you will complete 12 required practicals and work towards a practical endorsement.
