Course Summary

This course builds on and extends core Fine Art skills, alongside developing your creativity, expression, imagination, and critical and contextual understanding.

Course Details

The emphasis of the first year is underpinned by core Fine Art skills, achieved through experimentation and exploration of a broad range of materials, techniques and processes. You will engage with the works of artists and designers which encourages a written critical response and enables you to analyse the way you work to inform and develop your personal work into an extended exploratory portfolio.

The second year focuses on developing and extending existing creative skills. You are encouraged to develop an independent approach to the subject, demonstrating continued critical understanding, supported by integrated written engagement with the works of artists and designers to inform and develop work which has a personal significance and major in-depth, practical and theoretical investigation.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Year 1: Personal creative enquiry

Year 2: Personal investigation and an externally-set assignment (15 hours)

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-4 including English at grade 4 or above and an art-based subject, preferably Art and Design.

Equipment required

You will be asked to provide materials such as pencils, paintbrushes and sketchbooks plus contribute toward the cost of specialist or large quantities of materials you may choose for your projects. Some trips such as visits to museums and galleries are compulsory.

Your next steps...

The course will prepare you for further study at Foundation Diploma, HND, and degree level. Careers in the creative industries include practical fine art and design making, illustration, teaching, gallery administration, architecture, art direction, film, television, curating, and restoration.
