Course Summary

THEATRE STUDIES PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO ACT, DESIGN AND EXPLORE PLAY TEXTS AND LIVE PERFORMANCE.

The course is evenly balanced between practical work and academic study. It should be noted that the course requires considerable wider reading from students and progress throughout the course is assessed through a series of regular essays and practical assignments. Students benefit from regular trips to the theatre and workshops or talks from visiting professionals.

Course Details

Component 1 - Drama and Theatre Written Exam (40%) - The study of Two Set Texts which are analysed both practically and theoretically. Also written analysis of a live performance.

Component 2 - Creating Original Drama Devising (30%) - Creating their own piece theatre with a practitioner’s influence and then the performance of the piece, this is supported by a written Working Notebook.

Component 3 - Making Theatre Practical scripted (30%) - The performance of 3 extracts from 3 different plays studied over the 2 years. This is supported by a written Reflective Report.

There is an expectation that students will join Acting Up Company to develop performance skills, be that acting or designing/directing.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 4 or above including English, as well as a 5 in GCSE Drama. Applicants without these grades may be considered in the light of extracurricular drama following an interview.

A degree or apprenticeship in acting, designing, stage management, script writing, drama therapy, teaching. The transferable skills of improvisation, problem solving, public speaking, confidence and verbal and written skills gained during the A Level will be valuable in a wide range of careers; law policing, HR, event management.
