Course Summary

THE A-LEVEL FILM COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ SKILLS SO THAT THEY BECOME ADEPT IN BOTH INTERPRETING AND MAKING FILM TEXTS.

Through the study and analysis of film texts and exercises in filmmaking, the course explores film history, theory and socio-economic background. The course develops students’ critical abilities, enabling them to appreciate the multiplicity of cultural and historical perspectives in film. Students also develop the professional and technical skills to express themselves creatively in film. The course requires willingness to attempt to understand alternative views, to respect and appreciate cultural diversity, and to have an open and critical mind.

Course Details

Students will study a full spectrum of the film landscape these include:

Hollywood Film 1930-1990

American Film since 2005

British Film since 2005

Global Film- European and World Texts

Documentary Film

Silent Film

Experimental Film

To complement this, students will be formally assessed on their practical skills. You will be required to make a short film and evaluation, which will form 30% of your final grade.

There is no expectation for students to have access to their own film equipment. The department is well resourced with a range of cameras, microphones, lighting and industry standard editing software.

30% COURSEWORK

70% EXAM

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 4 and above including a grade 4 in Media if they studied it at GCSE. Alternatively, if not studied at GCSE, you must get a grade 4 or better in English.
