Course Summary

THE EPQ MUST BE CHOSEN ALONG WITH THREE OTHER LEVEL 3 COURSES.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE A PASSION FOR THE TOPIC THAT THEY DECIDE TO BASE THEIR PROJECT AROUND AND THIS CAN BE IN THE FORM OF A DISSERTATION, PERFORMANCE, SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION OR A PIECE OF CREATIVE WRITING OR AN ARTEFACT IN ANOTHER ARTISTIC MEDIUM.

Course Details

The EPQ gives you a unique opportunity to explore a topic of your own choosing or to become more deeply involved with your own creativity if that is an interest.
Students can choose from one of the following units:
301: Dissertation - a theoretical written project (5000 words minimum) on any topic presenting an argument.
302: Investigation/Field Study - a practical investigatory project involving the collection of data.
303: Performance - development of practical skills resulting in a performance of music, drama or sport.
304: An Artefact - Making or designing something creative or to a design brief or to solve a problem.

This qualification is a 100% coursework course, which is studied over one year and will be entered for assessment in May of the examination year.
The EPQ aids the development of many key skills such as independent learning, research, academic writing, creativity, communication to an audience and critical thinking, all of which are valued by both employers and universities.
Many universities view the EPQ as an excellent way for students to get ready for university as many of the skills that are needed when completing the project are the same skills that are needed for university study. For some courses the university will make an alternative offer to an applicant based on their EPQ grade.
An EPQ is worth between 8 and 28 UCAS points making it roughly equivalent to half an A level or a Pass Grade at BTEC.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

DISSERTATION: This course is assessed in the form of a dissertation, usually between 5,000 and 10,000 words. Plus a presentation of the study.

Entry requirements

A grade 4 or higher at GCSE English and the student needs to be studying three other A Levels/Level 3 options alongside the Extended Project

Your next steps...

The project is ideal for students who are intending to apply for higher education as it offers students the opportunity to enhance many skills that universities are looking for. These skills include: research skills, independence, organisation, self-motivation, essay writing skills, performing skills and creativity. Many of these attributes also apply to a vast range of job opportunities in the wider world.
