Course Details

A Level Sociology will help you to make sense of the society we live in and understand the cultural and identity issues which affect us all. You will learn plenty of skills including, the use of evidence to support your arguments, how to investigate facts, and critical thinking.

It is relevant to the society you live in, so you are bound to enjoy learning about topics that are relevant to everyday life; plus, it opens the door to a fantastic range of interesting careers.

The course covers a wide range of topics including compulsory modules in Education, Methods in Context, Crime and Deviance and Research Methods. In addition students study the optional modules in topics, which are Families and Households and Beliefs in Society.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There will be three 2hr written exams at the end of the course, with 80 marks per paper, each 33.3% of the A Level grade. There is no coursework element although research projects will be conducted during the course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 4 or above including English and Literature at a grade 5 and Sociology or a Humanities subject.

You could take this course with other Advanced Level courses to prepare for Higher Education in one or more of the Social Sciences such as Sociology, Development Studies, Anthropology, Psychology or more any other Higher Education courses. You could also go straight into employment as the course is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, particularly the media, government, education, law and the health and social care sectors.
