Course Summary

THE HISTORY COURSE THAT WE OFFER AT HOMEWOOD COMPRISES STUDIES OF MORE THAN 500 YEARS OF BRITISH, EUROPEAN AND GLOBAL HISTORY. OVER THE TWO YEARS, STUDENTS STUDY A HUGE NUMBER OF KEY HISTORICAL EVENTS INCLUDING THE REFORMATION, THE COLD WAR, AND THE RISE OF THE NAZI PARTY. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE TAUGHT HOW TO DEVELOP A RANGE OF HISTORICAL SKILLS INCLUDING EVALUATING THROUGH SECOND ORDER CONCEPTS SUCH AS CAUSE, CONSEQUENCE AND SIGNIFICANCE, AND LEARNING TO ANALYSE SOURCES AND INTERPRETATIONS.

Course Details

The modules students study are:

Unit 1: Y106: The Early Tudors: 1485 – 1558 (25%)

Unit 2: Y221: Democracy and Dictatorships in Germany 1919–1963 (15%)

Unit 3: Y318: Russia and its Rulers 1855–1964 (40%)

Unit 4: Y100: Coursework module (20%)

The three exams consist of essays, source analysis, historical enquiries and use of historical interpretations. All modules will be examined at the end of the two year course.

In Year 13 students complete an independent piece of extended writing on a selected topic of their choice worth 20% of their final grade.

We also aim to boost students' experience of History by organising trips for our GCSE and A Level students, and are taking our current cohort to Munich in February 2026.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The 3 exams will comprise of essays, source analysis, historical enquiries and use of historical interpretations. All modules will be examined at the end of the 2 year course.

Unit 4: Coursework: In this module, students are given the autonomy to complete an answer on their choice of question from a range of topics selected by the History department. The final word count should be between 3000 - 4000 words.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 4 or above including English and a 5 in History.

Studying History not only provides students with an understanding of the modern world, but also gives them a range of skills including analysis, persuasive writing, problem solving, and research skills. These skills can of course lead directly to history specific jobs such as working in a museum, school or archive, but are also extremely transferable and can provide opportunities in a wide variety of careers including those in law, marketing, media and many more.
