Course Summary
The A Level Dance course extends students’ knowledge and understanding of performance, choreography and appreciation. The specification reflects both historical and current dance practices making it interesting and relevant.
This course provides a well-rounded Dance education and opens doors to a wide range of careers and pathways.
Course Details
Component One:
Performance and Choreography (Practical Examination)
Students will learn a variety of solos in a range of styles based on the features of a practitioner including Matthew Bourne, Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins to name a few. As well as this, students will learn, contribute to and perform a quartet in a modern style. Choreographically, students will create an original piece for three to five dancers in response to an externally set task.
Component Two:
Critical Engagement (Written Examination)
Students will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of ‘Rooster’ by Christopher Bruce and ‘Sutra’ by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, as well as their corresponding areas of study, Rambert Dance Company and The Independent Contemporary Dance Scene in Britain.
Entry requirements
General entry requirements : Grade 4 in English Language and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at grade 4 or above is the minimum requirement to enter Hillview Sixth Form.
SUBJECT SPECIFIC ENTRANCE CRITERIA:
GCSE Dance Grade 5 or above (or equivalent) plus GCSE English Language and Maths Grade 4 or above. An APS or 4.25 or above.

A-level Dance encourages students to develop their creative and intellectual capacity, alongside transferable skills such as team working, communication and problem solving. All of these are sought after skills by higher education and employers and will help them stand out in the workplace whatever their choice of career. The course also prepares students for professional dance training
and university study, which could lead to a variety of careers such as Dancer/Performer, Choreographer, Director, Stage Manager, Dance Critic, Physiotherapist, Movement Therapist, Dance Teacher and many more.
