Entry Requirements: Minimum entry requirements are 5 GCSE's at Grade 4 or above, which MUST include English Language and Mathematics, plus any additional individual subject requirements.

Course Summary

Biology is the study of living organisms and covers a wide variety of topics including organisms, cells, exchange and mass transport, biochemistry, genetics and ecosystems.

Course Details

In fact, biological issues are never far from the headlines, be they G.M crops, HIV, the human genome, obesity or deforestation. Students will learn about the biology behind contemporary issues such as DNA structure, mutations and control within the human body. They will also explore the different types of cloning and inherited change, along with cell recognition and the immune system.

Students will study the following modules:

• Biological molecules
• Cells
• How organisms exchange substances with their environment
• Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
• Energy transfers in and between organisms
• How organisms respond to changes in their environments
• Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
• The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

General entry requirements to study Level 3 qualifications at Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 or above in English Language and Grade 6 or above in Maths plus 3 other GCSE subjects at 4 or above.

Subject specific entrance requirements are:

GCSE Biology Grade 6 or above, Chemistry Grade 6 or above, or GCSE Combined Science minimum Grades 7/6. GCSE Maths grade 6 or above plus English Language grade 5 or above. An APS of 5.5 or above.
