Course Summary

A Level Fine Art provides an exciting opportunity for students to develop a broad range of art skills such as painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture and lens-based image making/ installation.

Course Details

Students are encouraged to incorporate newer digital technologies in their work. The course requires students to make in-depth personal and imaginative responses to a given theme and has a strong academic element. Students learn how to respond to and discuss ideas, concepts and issues relating to Art and Design. This course consists of two components.

• Component 1, which makes up 60% of the mark, is in two parts: Practical work (72 marks) and Personal study (18 marks).

• Component 2 is the Externally Set Assignment, which makes up 40% of the mark.
Both components involve creative problem solving which requires students to undertake investigative and research work in addition to experimental exploration, looking at alternative ways of finding a solution. Sketchbook work needs to be informed, purposeful and extensive. Students must make focused independent research, from primary source investigation, exploration and experimentation, before developing their final outcomes. This independent work is demanding and students must be prepared to be hard working and innovative risk takers.
