Course Summary

Students who enrol on this course will be developing the following skills:

The ability to comprehend, synthesise and interpret political information

Analyse and evaluate political knowledge

Identify connections, assess similarities and differences between the areas studied

Select relevant material and construct and communicate arguments clearly and coherently using appropriate political vocabulary

As students embark on their university or professional lives, never has it been more important to think critically and analytically in order to make informed judgements about the world around them. This course allows students the opportunity to develop a way of thinking that is essential for the modern professional world and to establish knowledge of the wider world around them in depth, and not just of the political nature.

Course Details

This is a 2 year course. The first year of the course focusses on British politics and the second year on American politics:


· Unit 1: People, Politics and Participation


· Unit 2: Governing modern Britain


· Unit 3: The politics of the USA or Ideologies


· Unit 4 :The politics of the USA or Ideologies in Action

The A-level Government and Politics specification is designed to encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills and enhance their ability to interpret, evaluate and comment on the nature of politics. Students acquire knowledge of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom and are encouraged to think and debate more widely about how other political systems may differ.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

3 x 2 hour examinations

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs with a mixture of 9-5 grades or equivalent in at leasr five different subjects, including English Language/ Literature and Mathematics (minimum grade 5).
