Course Summary

A level Mandarin at Seaford Head School provides a greater depth of understanding of the language, but also offers students the precious opportunity to appreciate the culture, values and beliefs of those who speaking the language. Students will immerse themselves in Chinese culture, Chinese literature and arts, as much a part of the course as learning the language itself.


Course Details

Billions of people in the world speak Mandarin. Mandarin is believed to be the most widely-spoken language across the globe. This A level course at Seaford Head School provides access in terms of communication and the ability to connect with people from all over the world, especially from a business point of view the advantages of being able to do so with anyone involved in Chinese markets.

International businesses tend to employ people who speak more than one language. With China’s economy booming, business leaders are more likely to hire people who speak Mandarin alongside English, and those who are able to appreciate and operate successfully in a Chinese cultural context.

The syllabus for A Level Mandarin Chinese is divided into four themes:

Theme 1 – Changes in Contemporary Chinese society

Theme 2 – Chinese Culture

Theme 3 – Evolving Chinese Society

Theme 4 – Post-1978 China on the World Stage

Listening, reading and translation (40%)

Paper 2

Written response to works and translation (30%)

Paper 3

Speaking (30%)


Entry requirements

Preferably GCSE Mandarin grade 4 or above
