Course Details

This course enables students to engage with, explore and understand business behaviour and develop a critical understanding of what business is and does. It offers students an insight into the world in which they will eventually be working.

The A Level Business course includes the following topics:

· What is business?, Managers, leadership and decision making

· Decision making to improve marketing performance

· Decision making to improve operational performance

· Decision making to improve financial performance

· Decision making to improve human resource performance

· Analysing the strategic position of a business, choosing strategic direction, strategic methods: how to pursue strategies, managing strategic change

How will it be delivered and assessed?

A-level Business is assessed by three, two-hour written exams at the end of the course:

Paper 1: Multiple-choice questions, short answers and two essays

Paper 2: Three compulsory data response questions

Paper 3: One compulsory case study consisting of six questions

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in Mathematics and English Language GCSE and a minimum of three other subjects at grade 5 or above.

It is not essential for students to have previously studied a business related course at GCSE level. However, it is important that students have strong numerical abilities as A-Level Business assesses quantitative skills, making up a minimum of 10% of the overall marks. The skills tested include ratios, averages, fractions, percentages and calculation of profit and loss.

Potential students will have :

an interest in how businesses function

an interest in how businesses influence groups in society

an interest in what influences and affects businesses

the ability to take part in discussion and use examples to help emphasis issues and

the ability to organise work and meet deadlines
