Launching this year across the UK, Multiply is a new government-funded programme to help adults improve their numeracy skills.
Multiply offers easy access to free numeracy courses that can help you brush up on your maths skills and help you become more confident with numbers. Whether you need help in managing your bills and budgeting, or to help your kids with their maths homework, good numeracy skills may unlock opportunities to help you achieve more in your life and can lead to better job prospects, and higher wages or prepare you for further study.
If you’re aged 19+ and do not already have a GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) in maths, Multiply is available to you.
Free maths and numeracy courses in East Sussex
3, 2, 1 … Cook! is a short course delivered by GRH Training Consultancy for participants who want to have fun cooking while improving and gaining confidence in maths skills. Available in various locations across East Sussex.
3, 2, 1 … Cook! is for anyone who would like to explore their cooking skills whilst improving their confidence in basic maths skills required in the kitchen. You will make two dishes each week whilst being guided through maths within a recipe. You are welcome to stay and eat at the end of the session, or take the food home to share.
Maths is functional and core topics such as addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, weights, measures, time, money, fractions and percentages are all embedded and repeated in each recipe. You will be supported to manage any fear you might have of maths, to build your confidence and ultimately recognise your numeracy potential.

Overview:
Effective money management and budgeting course is available in Newhaven, Eastbourne and Hastings.
Summary:
You can access 3 hours of one-to-one support with an Employability Coach providing you with the skills to be more confident with maths to better manage your personal finances. During your time with your Coach, you will be supported to complete a Better Off calculation to see how much benefit you are eligible for and how you might be better off in work. This option is ideal for anyone considering employment but who is worried that you ‘can’t afford to work.’ Equally, if you are on a low income and want to change your job, come and talk to us about the potential financial impacts. Or, if you are worried about the current cost of living and would like support with a budget this programme is an ideal starting place.
Suitable for:
Anyone unemployed/on a low-income 19+, living in East Sussex who has no Maths qualification GCSE grade C/4 or above. Anyone in low-income employment wishing to change roles.

Overview:
Bitesize numeracy sessions for employees in East Sussex priority sectors of Health and Social Care, Visitor Economy and Construction.
Summary:
Bitesize numeracy learning modules that meet the needs of employers and improve the numeracy skills of those working in East Sussex priority sectors. Courses will be bespoken to meet employer need but examples include measuring medicine, calculating quantities, handling money, carbon calculating, using excel, managing orders, or other numeracy needs identified in partnership with employers from these sectors. Learning will take place either at employer premises or at a college campus – Eastbourne, Lewes, Hastings or Newhaven.
Suitable for:
Anyone employed in East Sussex priority sectors without a maths qualification at GCSE grade C/4 or above.

Overview:
Sector-Based Work Academies are delivered by East Sussex College Group and are for anyone unemployed and keen to gain vital employment skills specifically related to the industry in which they would like to work in. Each Work Academy will include the basic maths and vocational skills required to move into employment within the relevant sector.
Summary:
Each Sector-Based Work Academy includes the vocational and technical learning you need to access employment opportunities in key East Sussex sectors. Examples of Academies on offer include Security, Hospitality, Rail and Health & Social Care. You will also gain relevant certificates where available e.g. First Aid, Food Hygiene, Health & Safety. Numeracy will be embedded into each Academy to ensure you feel confident with the basic maths required for your chosen sector.

Overview:
One to one numeracy focused support tailored to individual needs, delivered in central Eastbourne town centre location (opposite Saffrons Park/walking distance from train station and local bus routes.)
Summary:
This programme is ideal for anyone who prefers one-to-one support. You set the curriculum and the pace! Your tutor will create your personalised curriculum based on your needs. For example, this could include help with managing the household finances and budgeting, feeling more confident helping your children with homework or brushing up your numeracy skills to feel better able to apply for work. You can choose to plan your learning across regular, longer sessions or have it delivered over shorter, spread-out sessions.

Anyone aged 19+ who would like support in becoming more confident in numeracy-related issues and/or wants to eventually gain accredited qualifications.

Looking to secure work in a land-based sector then this intensive tree surgery course, delivered at Plumpton College (Lewes), is just for you.
Summary:
This programme is ideal for anyone looking to develop forestry and arboriculture tree skills. You will benefit from working towards a ‘competency ticket’ (these are the competencies employers require to show you can work in the industry safely). By the end of the programme, you will be able to demonstrate the safe use of equipment and machinery. In addition, you will be supported with the maths and communication skills needed to help your problem-solving skills. On completion, you will have the evidence required to become insured in this field of work. Ideal for anyone who is physically fit and interested in working outdoors (in all weathers!)
Suitable for:

A Horticulture and Estate Skills course delivered at The Firs in Hastings, East Sussex.
Summary:
An introductory land-based course delivered at The Firs site in Hastings – ideal for physically fit adults looking to develop their horticultural skills who would have previously found travel to the Plumpton College site a barrier to engagement. At The Firs you will be able to gain practical skills in conservation and land management as well as basic numeracy skills to help with project planning.
During the programme you will work as part of a team, undertake different roles required for garden design, develop a budget for a design project, learn how to cost a project and plan for contingencies.

Summary:
This course is ideal for parents and/or carers who would like to improve their confidence and knowledge in order to support their child’s learning at home. Overview:
Short numeracy interventions for land-based employees to help with the development of good mathematical skills in the workplace.
Summary:
This short course is ideal for current employees within the land-based sector who would benefit from brushing up their numeracy skills. The course is designed to tackle and better understand the anxiety that can arise when faced with a piece of work that requires calculations. Employees will benefit from identifying approaches to solving common maths problems and will leave the course knowing how to get further assistance in improving their maths skills for use at home and work.
The course will be flexibly designed but could include such topics as how to: calculate percentages; complete single and double-stage calculations for linear measurements and areas; basic trigonometry for setting marking out and laying plans; fuel ratio conversions; producing accurate quotes and understanding the measurements required for safe rigging.

Overview:
Changing Lives through Horses – an equine-based experience course with embedded numeracy.
Summary:
Ideal for 19+ adults facing challenges in life and looking for a new way to build confidence. Whilst learning how to care for horses you will also think about the importance of numeracy within the equine industry. This can include calculating horse weight, height and rider carrying capacities; a horse’s space requirements (accommodation – size of stables, arenas, fields etc); how to formulate a healthy horse diet including rationing using carbohydrate and protein percentage values as well as considering jump designs and the maths required for fencing repairs and estimating working times.

Small group delivery focused on supporting adults to move into employment within the local community including into Adult Social Care, Construction and Visitor Economy jobs. All learning will be contextualised to these employment sectors making it highly relevant and engaging. Summary:
This programme is designed for parents wishing to support their children with maths whilst enhancing their own numeracy skills. Parents will be supported to strengthen numeracy skills essential in everyday tasks for example budgeting, performing calculations, taking measurements, managing money, baking, estimating travel distances, reading timetables.

Numeracy in the Wild…with Education Futures Trust offer a safe and supportive environment to brush up your maths through sociable bushcraft activities.
Summary:
Numeracy in the Wild offers local adults aged 19+ who do not have a GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) in maths a weekly opportunity to learn outdoor skills (e.g.fire lighting and safety, tool use and safety, conservation techniques, ancient skills like basket and hurdle weaving, whittling with green wood) while increasing confidence with numbers.

Overview: Confidence and competence building of weight and liquid measurement in a social/health care setting, delivered in Eastbourne.
Summary:
This course is ideal for anyone working in the social or healthcare sector across East Sussex. You will leave this course with improved confidence in liquid and weight measurements relevant to your role.
