Course Summary

The Science Foundation Year is a programme designed for students who wish to pursue A Level Science rather than the vocational alternative but have fallen slightly short of the required grades (6/6 in Science and 6 in Maths). This would be suitable for students who have achieved well on the foundation tier but have not yet had the opportunity to study the higher tier. Students must have already studied GCSE Science or equivalent.

Course Details

You will choose to study two science subjects from GCSE Biology, Chemistry or Physics alongside higher-tier Maths GCSE (if you have not already achieved a grade 6 or better). For students who have achieved well in Maths, there is the option of taking the Core Maths course instead.

Alongside this, you will also take a Level 3 course equivalent to one A Level e.g. BTEC Applied Science, Animal Management or Engineering.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will sit two external exams for each of the science subjects and three for GCSE Maths at the end of the year. During the course, you will be set regular tasks and assessments to gauge your progress.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a grade 4/5 in GCSE Combined Science or separate sciences. A grade 4 or 5 in GCSE Maths. Must have already completed the required practicals.

Your next steps...

If you achieve 6/6 or better in Science and 6 in Maths, you will be able to take any of the Science A Level courses in combination with other A Levels or vocational courses offered by the College, subject to your qualifications.
