Course Summary

Over the course of two years, you will achieve a Level 3 Science vocational qualification equivalent to three A Levels which will help to prepare you for the scientific workplace or higher education.

Course Details

Year 1 includes:

  • Unit 1 covers the core principles across the three science disciplines.
  • Unit 2 focuses on practical procedures and techniques and introduces you to laboratory equipment and techniques.
  • Unit 3 focuses on science investigation skills.
  • Unit 4 covers lab techniques and their application in industry, health & safety and data storage.

Year 2 includes:

  • Unit 5 covers more advanced core principles across the three science disciplines.
  • Unit 7 focuses on contemporary issues in science. You will interpret, analyse and evaluate scientific articles which discuss a range of contemporary science issues.

You will also complete six optional units, which cover a range of biology, chemistry and physics topics. These may include Physiology, Organic Chemistry and Astronomy.

Mathematical skills and concepts run throughout many of the units.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is a combination of exams and internal assessments via assignments. Assignments range from full reports to presentations.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-4 including 4 or above in Double Award Science and 4 or above in English and Maths.

Equipment required

PPE such as lab coats and goggles may need to be purchased. You will also need to purchase a lab book for your project work. You may need to take part in compulsory visits which have associated costs.

This course leads to a diverse range of university courses such as Biomedical Science, Biology, Zoology, Diagnostic Radiography and Forensic Science. You will also be able to progress to higher apprenticeships within the science sector or employment.
