The Art & Design A level course is designed to develop intellectual, imaginative and expressive skills, as well as aesthetic and critical understanding. Our students are culturally diverse young people who are given every opportunity to express themselves through their art work. Students will explore a range of skills and media including: drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printing, mixed media, collage and new technologies. Please indicate on interview which area(s) you are interested in.

Pupils will need to demonstrate they are able to:

• Explore a theme.
• Develop and record ideas relevant to intentions and make connections with the work of others’.
• Observe Art disciplines, processes and techniques and interpreting/exploring these to create a personal response.
• Develop visual language techniques, concepts and ideas.
• Understand fundamental theories and apply these.

Year 12

• Unit 1 – Coursework portfolio

• You will experience a wide range of different materials and approaches and produce work

that demonstrates breadth and depth of skills and understanding.

• You will also produce an extended collection of work exploring different focused topics that will develop from an initial starting point and finish with a final outcome.

• Unit 2 – Externally set assignment

• You will undertake five hours unaided, supervised time which will lead to a final piece or

to further work of a developmental nature.

Year 13

• Unit 1 – (60% of Qualification) Personal Investigation including supporting studies, practical outcomes and a written personal study of between 1000 – 3000 words. (topics are student led) Work is completed with written elements that lead to a final piece or pieces in lessons and at home.

• Unit 2 – (40% of Qualification) Externally set assignment

• Topic options are provided by the exam board. Students have a choice of eight starting points. Starting during the first lesson in February until the exam during April/May, there is a time frame to work within to investigate, experiment, explore, refine, record and realise ideas and intentions. The final piece or pieces are completed under exam conditions over 3 days for a total of 15 supervised hours.

Students will require a minimum of five 9-4 grades at GCSE, including English and a minimum 6 grade in Art.

Creative Art A-Level is an ideal opportunity for those seeking to work within the visual arts. In addition, students may pursue diplomas and degrees in Fine Art, Art History, Graphic Design/ Illustration, Fashion/ Textiles, Theatre/ Interior Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Film/ Media, Advertising, Animation, Product Design, Engineering, Architecture.

This qualification may form part of the entry requirements for progression to higher education/university or employment in the Creative, Media and Innovative Design Sectors.

The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for. It will provide an opportunity for you to express yourself and your ideas with confidence and enthusiasm. Creative, Analytical, investigative and experimental thinking will benefit any pathway chosen after the course.
