English Language A Level [Y1]

Studying English Language A-Level will develop your creative writing and sharpen your analytical skills. You will understand the purpose of writing, discover more about spoken language and explore the impact that new technology has on modern-day language.

During the next two years, you will study the concepts and methods of linguistic analysis so you can explore a wide range of spoken, written and multi-modal forms of English. The syllabus puts the system of English language - pronunciation and writing, grammar and meaning - at the heart of the course. It will develop your ability to apply the system to texts, compare them and explain how particular language features contribute to meaning. You will develop original writing skills for a real-world purpose on topical language issues. You will also study how language develops and how it is used in the media. Towards the end of the second year, you will complete an independent language investigation, which will develop your research and presentation skills, and realise that language is one of the most powerful things you have at your disposal.

You will be assessed through regular feedback during the course, and be required to complete two written papers worth 80% of your overall mark. The final 20% will be made up by an independent language research project.

Our general entry criteria to study 3 A-Levels is: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 5. For a mixed Level 3 programme the criteria are: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 4. Subject specific entry criteria apply: A GCSE grade 4 in English Language.

Once you have completed this course, you can progress onto degree-level study in creative writing, journalism, or English. Following your degree, there are a number of career opportunities available to you, such as becoming a journalist, a speech and language therapist, an English teacher, or a copywriter.
