Course Fees Students aged 16-18 on 31st August in the year of starting the course do not pay tuition fees. Students aged 19-23 studying their Level 1, 2 or first Level 3 may be entitled to tuition fee waiver depending on criteria eligibility. Students aged 24+ who are studying a second Level 3 course or aged 24+ who are studying their first Level 3 course will have to pay tuition fees, depending on the course. Students on low income who can prove they earn less than £25,000 (from September 2024); are unemployed; or receive state benefits could be entitled to a tuition fee waiver. All students pay a standard facility fee of £150 to use communal, non-educational facilities. Material fees apply to Floristry, Blacksmithing and Metalwork, Agricultural Engineering, and Motor Vehicle students, which contribute to quality resources and equipment for their studies.

Course Summary

The Engineering T-Level combines a strong theoretical knowledge base with practical skills, supporting you to develop safe, professional working practices which effectively prepare you for industry, including a range of welding techniques and metal fabrication processes. This programme, developed in conjunction with industry, is ideal for students who are interested working in engineering and manufacturing industries.

Foundational engineering knowledge and skills will enable students to explore the context and realities of working within the engineering and manufacturing sectors, as well as core theoretical knowledge and practical skills which are applicable to ay engineering environment.

Working within Plumpton College’s industry standards engineering facilities learners will experience a range of engineering processes and manufacturing techniques, carrying out metal fabrication and welding work to enable you to develop industry-standard skills which are applicable to a wide range of engineering and manufacturing applications.

This T Level requires students to undertake an extensive industry-based work placement alongside the programme, further reinforcing newly developed skills and offering an insight into the engineering industry.

Engineering Core Curriculum

Through the core engineering curriculum, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of:

  • Working within the engineering and manufacturing sectors and the professional responsibilities, attitudes and behaviours required to do so.
  • Health and safety principles and practice in engineering environments
  • Applied Maths and Science for engineering and manufacturing.
  • Materials and their properties
  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Mechatronics
  • Engineering and manufacturing control systems
  • Quality management
  • Business, commercial and financial awareness
  • Project management
  • Stock and asset management.
  • Continuous improvement

Occupational Specialism

Students will develop the skills to be able to respond to industry project briefs, taking projects from conception to production, quality testing, review and evaluation, developing their knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • Machinery and technology used in fabrication and welding.
  • The importance of continually reviewing fabrication and general engineering processes and procedures.
  • Principles, procedures and testing of different joining techniques
  • Analysis of technical documentation, tasks, projects and specifications
  • Producing products to specification
  • Skills in cutting and forming metal for the production of fabricated products.
  • Skills in quality, compliance and testing

Work Experience

Work experience enhances your studies and is an important part of your course. It ensures you leave college ready for the world of work. It is compulsory to undertake an element of work experience when studying a Level 1, 2, or 3 course.

Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs (Grade 4+) to include English (4+), Maths (4+) and Science (3+)
  • Level 2 Engineering qualification having achieved English and Maths at Grade 4 or above.

Equipment required

Students on a 14-16, Level 1, 2, 3, or Foundation Learning course may be required to purchase equipment such as a uniform, PPE, or kit before starting their course. Material fees are applicable depending depending on the course studied. Equipment & PPE
