Course Summary

A-Level Chemistry builds on chemical concepts from GCSE. On this course you will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different Chemistry topics and how they interrelate. You will study topics including atomic structure, electrons and bonding, the periodic table, organic chemistry, modern analytical techniques, energy and resources. Over the course you will deepen understanding of how science works; appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how science affects the economy, environment and society; develop safe and effective practical skills of manipulating lab equipment, handling chemicals, observation, analysis and evaluation; develop your enthusiasm for chemistry and prepare for further study and careers in chemistry and the sciences.

Course Details

A-Level chemistry builds upon chemical concepts developed at GCSE. At A-Level you will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of chemistry and how they inter-relate; develop and demonstrate deeper understanding of How Science Works and develop safe and effective practical skills of manipulating laboratory equipment. At A level you will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Chemistry and how they inter-relate and develop safe and effective practical skills of manipulating laboratory equipment. There are six teaching modules in the new OCR specification: Practical skills in Chemistry, Foundation in Chemistry, Periodic table and energy, Core organic Chemistry, Physical chemistry and transition elements, and Organic chemistry and analysis

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The content will be assessed by three written exams at the end of the second year. There will also be a practical endorsement of Chemistry which will be assessed (non-exam) as part of the course.

Entry requirements

Our general entry criteria to study 3 A-Levels is: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 5. For a mixed Level 3 programme the criteria are: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 4. Subject specific entry criteria apply: A GCSE grade 5 in Maths, Combined Science 66 or Chemistry grade 6.
