Course Summary

This course is an opportunity to specialise in Photography. It is a practical course covering a wide range of approaches to photography with digital and darkroom skills. This is supported by written research into historical and contemporary photographers and their practice. It includes trips to local and national galleries as well as work experience and exhibition opportunities. Students will be supported to develop their professional skills in preparation for a career in Photography. This qualification is the equivalent of one A Level and can therefore be done as part of an A Level programme.

Course Details

This is a six-unit qualification over two years. There are compulsory units which embrace transferable skills such as visual recording, contextual influences, materials, techniques and processes, and communicating ideas and concepts in photography. The specialist photography units explore digital, darkroom, portraiture, landscape, and digital manipulation.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is all coursework based with no examination. Units comprise of taught and independently guided practical and written assignments within the different areas of photography covered.

Entry requirements

At least four to five GCSEs graded 9-4 including English at 4 or above and an art-based subject. A portfolio is acceptable if you are not currently taking an art-based GCSE.

Equipment required

You will be expected to have the necessary basic materials and equipment such as sketchbooks, pencils, printer credit, and presentation materials. Film and darkroom photography may incur additional costs. There will also be occasional costs for trips and visits.
