Course Summary

Media is everywhere. In A-Level Media, we look at culturally significant theoretical perspectives in analytical writing and teach you how to use industry specialist software to construct a range of print, AV and online forms.

Course Details

During this two-year course, you will study three main components of media. You will start by investigating what the media is. You will consider a range of media forms, from music marketing to video games. You will analyse media language, explore representations in the media, investigate media industries and consider audience behaviour. Relevant theories and case studies will help you to develop your own insight. The second component will teach you more about media forms and products. You will study global television, mainstream and alternative magazines, plus media in the online age. You will also explore texts in more detail and become a critically engaged media consumer. The third component focuses on cross-media production. You will construct an individual cross-media production using digital technology. This could be a television programme, design a magazine, plan and make a film or a music marketing campaign. You will also produce a portfolio of practical and creative work that utilises industry specialist software and equipment.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Your assessment will consist of 70% exams and 30% coursework. All of your assessments will take place at the end of your second year. However, there will be numerous progress tests and mock exams across both years to prepare you for these.
