Course Summary
A Level Mathematics
This course extends and enhances work previously covered at GCSE. Students explore new and interesting areas of mathematics; for example the beauty and efficiency of calculus. Maths is a demanding, but hugely rewarding subject and we would urge all bright mathematicians to consider it strongly as a subject to study in Sixth Form.
How will I learn?
You will have four lessons a week with two Maths specialist teachers. Along with the lessons, you will need to use your own study time to consolidate the work covered in class. This will include tasks set by the teacher, but you will also need to regularly review work previously covered to ensure you are prepared for assessments.
How will I be assessed?
The course comprises three units at AS Level and a further three units for the full A2; all the units are assessed through written examination papers. The compulsory Pure Core units comprise work on algebra, calculus, trigonometry and vectors. In Year 12, you will study towards Pure Core 1, Pure Core 2 and Decision 1 (practical problem solving using algorithms and linear programming) for a June examination. In Year 13, you will sit exams in Pure Core 3 and Mechanics 1 (the Maths behind the motion of objects), along with Pure Core 4 in June.
