Entry Requirements: - For entry onto our A Level and BTEC courses we require:

• a minimum of 6 separately identifiable GCSE subjects at an average grade 5.5 or above and at least a grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics;

• a grade 6 or above in the chosen course of study or a related subject as specified in the sixth form prospectus.

• two grade 7sin Mathematics or Sciences, to study 2 or more Sciences or Mathematics and Science.

Assessment:

There are two examined units (Tudors & Russia) worth 40% of the marks each plus one coursework essay (Civil Rights) worth 20% of the total marks.

Why choose History:

History is an exciting and engaging subject and one that employers and universities all covet. In the course of your studies you will learn about key individuals and events that have shaped our lives today. The syllabus we have chosen is diverse and dynamic in its scope and content. It ranges from the courts of Tudor kings to the palaces of Russian tsars. You will explore world-changing moments, such as the Russian Revolution and the March on Washington, and examine the part played by the great movers and shakers of history, men and women as different as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Lenin and Stalin and Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. History is who we are and why we are the way we are!

Skills and progression:

Students who take A-level History come away with excellent research and communication skills. They will learn to gather evidence, question it and organise their thoughts in a cohesive and persuasive way. There will be opportunities to conduct original research and visit archives and universities where they will experience the thrill of handling original documents associated with key events and leading players in history. There will be the opportunities to take part in extra-curricular visits, notably Washington, but also the National Archives in Kew and local university lectures. You will also be encouraged to develop your presentation skills, working in groups or individually before presenting your ideas to your peers. You may also want to take part in our highly successful Masterclass series in which students and lecturers discuss ideas relating to their own interests and research. History offers a broad range of skills which can take you into a variety of careers including teaching and education, media and communication, public administration and business.
