Course Summary
Studying hairdressing at Northbrook MET is hands-on, exciting and will leave you with the skills, confidence and experience to progress to employment or further study. Our commercial salon, based at Broadwater Campus, is the perfect learning environment for our students. Popular with local customers, the salon is run as a professional business, which allows our students to gain real-life work experience that is so valued by future employers.
You will develop your skills in customer service, communication and commerciality as well as cutting, styling and colouring, preparing you for work in salons, hotels, airlines, cruise liners and department stores in the UK or overseas.
Our expert tutors have years of professional experience and inspire our students to reach their potential and prepare them for employment. The MET has excellent links with the industry and you will take advantage of this through guest lectures/visits.
Course Details
On this course you will learn:
- Principles and practices of hairdressing services
- Advising and consulting with clients
- Shampooing, conditioning, treating hair and scalp
- Cutting hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
- Styling and finishing hair using a range of techniques
- Colouring and lightening hair using a range of techniques
- Perming and neutralising hair
- Creating an image based on a theme
Entry requirements
To start at Level 2 you should have at least 3 GCSEs at grade 3 (D/E) or above, including English and maths.
In addition to the specified entry requirements, you may be required to undergo an assessment of your English skills to ensure you are at a sufficient level for your chosen course.
Start on the Level 1 introduction to Hair & Beauty course, if you do not have the above grades.

What's next
Upon successful completion of this Level 2 course you can progress to either a level 3 barbering apprenticeship or the full-time hairdressing course. Alternatively, you can move on to other specialist level 2 and 3 qualifications, such as make-up artistry, theatrical make-up, or part-time courses in hair extensions or African Caribbean hair.
As you are required to have a salon placement running alongside your course, employers will often employ you on successful completion of your qualification.
