This highly rewarding course equips you with many transferable skills, including communication, critical thinking, creativity, research skills, problem solving, and cultural awareness.

German is the most sought-after language by UK employers. It is the first language of 95 million people, the most widely spoken language in the EU, and one of the most common second languages in Eastern Europe.

German combines well with any other course, including science, humanities, and creative subjects.

Course Details

German is a very varied subject consisting of both linguistic and cultural study. You will engage with interesting and authentic materials to help you develop your cultural knowledge, comprehension, speaking, and writing skills. You will study a range of topics related to the German-speaking world, such as music, festivals, art and architecture, immigration, youth and politics, and German reunification.

You will also study the film Good Bye, Lenin! and the play Der Besuch der alten Dame. As part of the speaking exam, you will complete an independent research project on a topic of your choice relating to a German-speaking country.

Lessons are varied and interactive, involving a range of grammar, translation, and speaking activities, as well as the analysis of spoken and written texts. You will also have German conversation sessions.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will sit three exams: two written papers and a speaking exam.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-5 including English plus a grade 6 or equivalent in German.

Equipment required

You should buy a copy of the play. It is strongly recommended that you buy a self-study A Level German grammar book to supplement your learning.
