Course Summary

This course encourages you to develop an interest in and enjoyment of English Literature through reading widely, critically and independently. You will study a range of texts across genres from modern poetry written after the year 2000, Margaret Atwood’s iconic dystopia, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, the groundbreaking ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley, Shakespeare’s exploration of the abuse of power in ‘Measure for Measure’ and the eclectic poetry of Christina Rossetti. Students also get the opportunity to complete coursework on their own choice of two texts.

Course Details

How will I learn?
You will need to read widely, developing a confident and independent response and insight into texts. You will be encouraged to reflect on your responses to texts in conjunction with the views of others. You will be encouraged to write using critical concepts and terminology with understanding and discrimination. Discussion will form a critical aspect of your learning while theatre visits will enhance your insight.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in a variety of ways both informally and formally. Informal tracking and assessment will be used to monitor your progress and plan any intervention needed. This will be done through assessment of written and oral responses. You will be required to complete one coursework assignment and one examination for both the AS and A2 years. There are four assessment objectives: communicate clearly, accurately and appropriately; show critical and analytical insight into texts' form, language and structure; explore connections between texts and interpretations; and understand how context influences these texts.
