Course Summary

BTEC Forensic and Criminal investigation covers at its heart a range of science topics from Biology, Chemistry and Physics along with a consideration as to how these are applied in forensic investigation. The course considers the skills and processes needed to investigate a crime scene from understanding the cause and time of death of a victim to what has caused a road traffic incident. This course also looks at practical techniques and how to carry out investigations in a laboratory setting. It’s a great choice if you have an interest in investigative Science and how these are used in the real world.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is done via a mixture of internal practical assessment and external exams.

Unit 1: Exam on Biology Chemistry and Physics

Unit 2: Internally assessed science practical assessment

Unit 3: Internal practical to gather results followed by external exam

Unit 4: Internally assessed coursework based around the processes of forensic investigation

Two Option Units: Covering a range of forensic themes from DNA evidence to fire damage


Entry requirements

Students joining BTEC Forensic investigation will need to have studied at least Double Science at GCSE level and have achieved 4-5 Grade
