Course Summary

The applied science sector is diverse and wide ranging, including biomedical, forensic, physical and chemical sciences. There are approximately 5.8 million people employed in science related occupations in the UK. This equates to approximately 20% of the workforce.

Who is this qualification for?

This is an Applied General qualification for those wanting to continue their education through applied learning and aiming to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, probably in the applied science sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to 1 A level, although students demonstrating a high level of commitment and achievement may be entered for the Diploma (2 A level equivalent) option.

Course Details

What does the qualification cover?

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been involved, in order to confirm that the content is also appropriate and consistent with current practice.

Everyone taking this qualification will study six mandatory units:

● Principles and Application of Science I

● Science Investigation Skills

● Principles and Application of Science II

● Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

● Laboratory Techniques and their Application

● Investigative Project.

Students choose two option units from a group, which has been designed to support progression to the range of sector related courses in HE and to link with relevant occupational areas.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

A combination of laboratory tasks, coursework and externally set and assessed examination.

Entry requirements

Students will require a minimum of five A*-C/9-4 grades at GCSE, including English Language at grade 5 and Science at grade 4.

This qualification is supported by a range of universities, and taken alongside other qualifications it can fulfil the entry requirements for a number of science-related higher education courses, including biomedical, forensic and sports science, as well as nursing. In addition, the qualification is eligible for UCAS points
