Course Summary

The Extended Certificate is for students who are interested in learning about the Applied Science sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in Applied Science - related subjects. It is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes A-Levels.

Course Details

Students will study five units over the two years.

Unit 1: Principles & Applications of Biology Structure and function of cells and tissues, biological molecules, enzymes and their role in organisms

Unit 2: Principles & Applications of Chemistry Structure of the Periodic Table and its implications on physical and chemical properties of substances, through analysis of different bonding methods

Unit 3: Principles & Applications of Physics Waves and their applications; force principles and their application in transportation and construction of electrical circuits

Unit 4: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques Practical applications across the sciences, including chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits. Students have a choice from two optional units covering the following topics:

* Unit 5: Scientific Investigation Skills - Investigative research, including planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation.

* Unit 6: Contemporary Issues in Science – Contemporary scientific issues including the reliability of sources of scientific information and their associated validity


Entry requirements

General entry minimum requirements to study three Level 3 qualifications for Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 in both English Language and Maths, together with 3 other GCSE grades at Grade 4 or above.

SUBJECT SPECIFIC ENTRANCE CRITERIA:

Any combination of two GCSE Sciences at grade 4 or above plus GCSE Maths and GCSE English at grade 4 or above. APS 5.25
